God Only Knows, or something like that

Hey people!
We’ve been away for a while. The past year, quite a lot happened, and not always for the best. One of the reasons we stopped performing was the fact our drummer Michel decided to leave audiotransparent. No fights, merely practical reasons. But he ain’t goin’ out like that! In february 2010, a lot of you voted for a valentine’s cover to be performed by us. The winning suggestion came from The Black Atlantic’s Geert van der Velde: ‘God only knows in the Groningen dialect’. We couldn’t get the translation right last year, so we were too late to release it on Valentine’s Day. But promises are there to be kept, so HERE it is; God only knows (in the Groningen dialect), sung by the only authentic Groninger that ever played in this band: Michel!
Another thing is recording. We decided to start work on a new album, along with our new drummer Wessel Spijkerman. Welcome Wessel! We have no plans for a release date, we’re but very eager to make new music. We’ll be touring again once we’re finished!
Keep track of this source for more updates, we’ll be dropping a feather every now and then….

Help us cover the best lovesong!

We need your help with the next Club AT single! We would love to record a nice cover of a lovesong, but we can’t figure out which song to cover… So please provide us with the necessary input! That way we’re sure we pick a popular, fitting-to-the-occasion song.

So please tell us about your favorite lovesong. Don’t be ashamed, even if it’s a Cradle of Filth song, we’ll take it seriously! Write down two or three sentences with the reason of this song being your favorite and we’ll create a poll of the first 10 songs. Then the people will decide which one we will cover for Club AT!

1. Send us you song + two or three sentences motivation, before the 4th of february
2. We’ll create the poll on february 4th
3. Start a campaign for your song (twitter! facebook! hyves! flyers!)
4. Winner will be announced on february the 12th
5. The winning song will be available for download on february the 14th!

Club single January 2010: Lighthouse

At the end of the summer, or better, the beginning of the fall, something great happened. The first edition of the festival Into The Great Wide Open was held at the lovely tiny island of Vlieland.

I think everyone who was there experienced it as a modern day Woodstock: fantastic people, great music, lots of heavy weather but also a great deal of sunshine, good, nice, warm atmosphere… All the hippy stuff your (grand)parents talked about! Together with three other bands, we were asked to create a soundtrack for the festival, which resulted in a cool video. Watch our part below:

Sharing Guns during EuroSonic & Noorderslag

This week we’re very, very, very active in our hometown Groningen. Yesterday we played a nice gig at the Unconvention afterparty with our friends The Black Atlantic, Rue Royale, Sexton Creeps, We Swim You Jump and Lars Ludvig Löfgren. It was also the first gig of the week we gave away our album, Chekhov Guns, for a variable price. In other words, we are asking you to:

KIndamuzik: ‘Hoe rock-’n-roll wil je het hebben?’

Wie Audiotransparent heeft zien optreden, zal de ingetogen muzikanten niet snel met een vechtpartij in verband brengen. Toch leidde een nieuw ingeslagen muzikale weg tot losse handjes van de Groningers tijdens het opnameproces van hun nieuwe plaat. Met bloedneuzen boven mengtafels en ontslagen producers als gevolg. Hoe rock-’n-roll wil je het hebben?

Muzikaal is echter weinig ruigs te bespeuren op Chekhov Guns. Ze laten de laid-back maar emotioneel geladen postrock van Nevland uit 2005 achter zich, en gaan richting gruizige indiepop. Met groter muzikaal avontuur in de vorm van bliepjes en ritmes uit de elektronische doos van bands als The Notwist. De viool halen ze minder vaak tevoorschijn. De melancholieke inborst van de bandleden is vanzelfsprekend onveranderd.

Tel daarbij de loodzware teksten van zanger Bart Looman over bijvoorbeeld ontrouw, echtscheiding, de dood en andere narigheid op, en je hebt geen hapklare brok muziek te pakken. Wel een plaat vol intrigerende eigenzinnigheid, borrelende elektronica en invloeden uit verschillende muzikale uithoeken zoals americana en synthwave. Alle aan elkaar gezongen door de zoetgevooisde Looman, die zijn vocale mogelijkheden én beperkingen kent.

De spannendste song is ‘I Saw Her Hanging There’, waarin stroperige elektronicaritmes het opnemen tegen een repetitieve vioolmelodie, eindigend in een fraaie climax. Het conservatieve popnummer ‘Really White Smile’ is gezegend met een intens refrein. In het zweverige ‘Far Away’ vullen tekst en muziek elkaar perfect aan.

De titel van de plaat verwijst naar de literaire techniek van het weglaten van onnodige elementen in een verhaal. Audiotransparent laat daarom wellicht minder gitaargeluid toe in de songs. Wat de ongrijpbaarheid verhoogt, maar sommige nummers ook dun laat klinken. En dan verlang je soms naar een beetje meer peper.

Ook Audiotransparent toont met Chekhov Guns aan dat er onder de oppervlakte van Neerlands indiescene mooie en interessante dingen gebeuren. Net zoals bijvoorbeeld Suimasen en Awkward I dat met hun recente platen deden. Het is de moeite waard om onder die oppervlakte te zoeken naar nog meer fraais.

The year 2009 is done, but we still wanted to share some material with you. Because that’s what Club AT is all about! Sharing the AT-love out there! We might be giving you free songs every month, but in return we’re getting back a lot! Really white videos, beautiful photos from our gigs, even live recordings!

Now for the final 2009 roundup. First up, we’ve got a great video (above) by @Koenjeweettoch with a short video about the day of our Chekhov Guns release party. It gives a lovely insight in how the band works, moves and sings behind the scenes.

We’re also seeing our guns travelling the world, like below in London (click on it!). The picture (left) was taken by world traveller and big time fan Joost Pijpker. Cool, thanks!

And last but not least, while we were enjoying our beers a few weeks back, Maarten made this drawing (above, right) inspired by our song You Are a Movie. Awesome stuff, Maarten!
